Course Highlights: Invaluable Content Designed to Elevate Your Doula Practice

Pregnancy loss can be devastating, and as a doula, you will inevitably support clients going through a loss or who are pregnant after a loss. While your existing doula skills are essential, there are specific advocacy needs for these families. Many hospitals lack a perinatal loss coordinator, as well as the appropriate supplies and resources to support families.

This is where WE come in!

Week 1: Overview of Perinatal Loss and the Different Types

We will explore the different types of perinatal loss, including miscarriage, stillbirth, TFMR, and neonatal death, and their associated medical terminology. We’ll also cover the emotional and physical impact on families, the societal effects, and disparities in loss rates, while emphasizing the doula's critical role in providing tailored support throughout the grieving process

Week 2: The Emotional and Physical Aspects of Perinatal Loss

This week dives into the emotional and physical aspects of perinatal loss, focusing grief education and the range of responses in parents and families, as well as the postpartum needs and medical interventions associated with different types of loss. You will learn how to offer empathetic emotional support while guiding families through physical recovery based on the specific circumstances of their loss.

Week 3: Communication Strategies and Practical Support for Families

In Week 3, we will focus on communication strategies, emphasizing clear, empathetic dialogue and active listening to ensure families feel heard and supported. You'll learn how to navigate difficult conversations with sensitivity, provide practical support, and assist with logistical tasks with confidence, all while creating a safe, comforting environment that encourages healing.

Week 4: Hospital and Long-Term Support-A Doula's Role

We will explore the doula's role in hospital settings, focusing on collaborating with healthcare teams and advocating for families during perinatal loss. You'll learn how to facilitate memory-making, navigate the transition from hospital to home, and connect families with community resources, while also developing strategies to provide long-term emotional care and guidance as families incorporate their loss into their lives.

Week 5: Self-Care for Doulas

In our final week, we will focus on self-care for doulas, discussing the signs of compassion fatigue and burnout, along with practical strategies to prevent and manage them. You'll create a personal self-care plan, develop boundary-setting techniques, and learn how to maintain balance to ensure long-term sustainability in your work
